  • Primary Wave Music Publishing is founded in April 2006 by industry veteran Larry Mestel with a transformative vision: artist-centric partnerships over traditional catalog ownership. From the outset, the company focused on actively revitalizing legacy music through modern marketing, sync, licensing, and cultural storytelling — redefining what music publishing could be.
  • The company completes its first landmark acquisition, securing 50% of Kurt Cobain’s publishing share of the Nirvana catalog. The deal establishes Primary Wave’s core acquisition strategy and sets the tone for a culture-first, value-creation approach to iconic music.
  • Acquires the MGM/United Artists publishing catalog, expanding the company’s footprint into film and classic entertainment music assets.
  • Justin Shukat joins Primary Wave as Partner.
