How do I copyright my new songs?
Under US copyright law, a song is copyrighted once it has been “fixed in a tangible medium from which it may be reproduced,” such as in sheet music or in a sound recording. The composition is protected by law whether or not the author his publisher formally files a notice with the US Copyright office. Filing such notice (along with a deposit copy of the musical work) is necessary, however, before initiating a copyright infringement case in federal court.
